Factorial Invariance of the Multidimensional Child and Adolescent Depression Scale (MCADS) Among Omani and Kuwaiti Students Across GenderThe present study aims at investigating the factorial invariance of the Multidimensional Child and Adolescent Depression Scale (MCADS) among Omani and Kuwaiti students across gender. A sample of 2536 public school students from Oman and Kuwait participated in this study. Their ages ranged between 11-17 years. Initially, the results of the confirmatory factor analysis of MCADS indicated that a good fit to the data after the deletion of low loadings items (Items: 1, 11, 16, and 23) in the Omani and the Kuwaiti samples. In addition, the results of two-group CFA of MCADS indicated that there is strong factorial invariance across Omani and Kuwaiti samples. Whereas, the results suggested that, there is weak factorial invariance across gender in both samples. Thus, it is not feasible to use the MCADS to compare the mean scores of males and females inside each country. This may be due to the low reliability of children's responses. The Appropriateness of International Classification Standards for the Arab Universities Status: An Evaluative StudyThe aim of this research is to explore the appropriateness of the international classification criteria for universities to the Arab universities case. To achieve this goal, the research begins by presenting the challenges faced by Arab universities, and then examining the most famous criteria of the international classification of universities related to Arab universities. In order for the study not to be mere theoretical, a questionnaire containing the criteria adopted in the most famous international classifications was developed and distributed to faculty members and officials in Arab universities to inquire about the appropriateness of these criteria for the nature of Arab universities. The study showed that the selection of Nobel Prizes, and the focus on research published in English, deprived many Arab universities from entering the global classifications. Accordingly, the study suggested adding new criteria depending on Arab universities situation. If this is not possible, a new international classification standard must be established, taking into account the specificity of the Arab and Islamic countries. Learned Helplessness and its Relationship to Parenting Styles in light of Goal Orientations as a Mediating Variable among 10th Grade Students in Sultanate of OmanThe study examines the role of goal orientations; as a mediating variable, in determining the association between parenting styles and learned helplessness. The sample included 645 10th grade students from Sultanate of Oman. The adolescents completed measures regarding their perception of parenting styles, goal orientations, and learned helplessness. Path analysis showed that the goal orientations mediated the relations between perception of parenting styles and learned helplessness dimensions (Expecting failure, reduced ability to control events). Specifically, the father permissive and authoritarian styles were found to be positively associated with the first dimensions of learned helplessness (Expecting failure) by pointing students' mastery-avoidance goals. Moreover, the authoritarian father was associated with the fourth dimension of learned helplessness (reduced ability to control events) due to its association with mastery-avoidance, and the mother permissive style was associated with the first dimensions of learned helplessness (Expecting failure) due to its association with performance-avoidance goals. The mother authoritative style was found to be negatively associated with the first dimensions of learned helplessness (Expecting failure) by pointing students' performance-avoidance goals. The researchers recommended the implementation of training programs for social workers, psychologists and teachers on the variables of study and their scholastic, psychological and social impact on students, and provide guidance programs for parents on the patterns of positive parenting and their contribution to reducing or increasing the state of learned helplessness. Middle School Social Studies Teachers Experiences in Teaching Spatial Thinking in Social Studies Classrooms in Kuwait: an Exploratory StudySocial studies educational research has, so far, devoted very little attention towards spatial thinking in classroom teaching. To help address such paucity, this study explores the spatial thinking instructional experiences of middle school social studies teachers in Kuwait. The goal is to learn their teaching practices and assess teacher understanding for the spatial thinking concept to enable future improvements. Using a qualitative study approach, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to examine the relevant experiences of 14 social studies teachers. The findings revealed three major themes: 1- Concepts of space, 2- tools of representation, and 3- spatial reasoning. These themes illustrated how social studies teachers focus predominantly upon simple concepts of space, using multiple tools of representation, but avoid addressing critical spatial reasoning. The findings help explain the current situation while identifying weaker areas for further analysis and improvement.
